Ferdie & Luisita Pacheco
A discussion about art and life experiences
Ferdie Pacheco, M.D. is an acclaimed artist from Miami. In addition to being recognized for his colorful paintings, Pacheco is known across the world for being Muhammad Ali’s former physician and long-time corner man, as well as for his career as an Emmy-Award winning boxing announcer.
Pacheco first opened a clinic for the poor in Overtown during the 1960s at a time when Miami was very much part of the segregated South. It was during this time that he met Angelo Dundee, proprietor of Miami Beach’s famed Fifth Street Gym and became an integral member of Muhammad Ali’s entourage. All told, he was a corner man for Ali during 12 world boxing champions. In the mid ’70s, Pacheco began his career as a boxing analyst on television, winning two Emmy awards. A documentary on his life, “The World of the Fight Doctor”, was shown at the Miami International Film Festival in early 2004. Pacheco has also authored 20 books.
